'UFOs over Hertfordshire...'

'UNEXPLAINED lights and flying discs have been spotted in the skies above Cheshunt in recent weeks, according to shocked eyewitnesses.

Pengelly Close resident Paul Adams had a shock when he observed a "human being-sized elongated thing" with a pulsing orange light. It was said to be hovering above a garden hedge at around 2.30am on September 14.

Mr Adams told the Herald: "It's a bit hard to explain. Basically it was coloured lights and an elongated thing." He added: "It was about the size of a human being, but it was above my hedge, this is the second time it's happened. The last time was over the top of my neighbour's house."

Another eyewitness account tells of "four extremely bright orbs, floating overhead" on August 25, at around 12.15am.'

Le Projet Triangle

'A 50-storey glass pyramid is to transform the Paris skyline after officials eager to rejuvenate the city voted to drop a ban on high-rise buildings. The first scheme will be Le Projet Triangle at Porte de Versailles in southern Paris, a privately funded, pyramid-shaped edifice created by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the Swiss architects who designed Tate Modern and the Olympic stadium in Beijing. Described variously as a modern Cheops, a giant blade or a witch's hat, the tower is due to be completed in 2012 and will contain offices, a conference centre and a 400-bedroom hotel as well as restaurants and cafes. Around it will be parks, gardens, shops and a bridge touted as a symbolic link between Paris and its downtrodden and often violent suburbs.'

'NYC Trade Centre dig exposes Ice Age landscape...'

'Crews excavating the World Trade Center site this summer for the foundations of a new skyscraper have uncovered features carved into the bedrock by glaciers about 20,000 years ago, including a 40-foot-deep pothole.

Exposing the solid rock beneath the ground zero site in lower Manhattan is critical for supporting what will be Tower 4 of the new World Trade Center, being built by Silverstein Properties.

"You want to make sure you're not perching something on a ledge," said Anthony Pontecorvo, a supervising structural engineer at Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers, which is working on the project.

While removing the overlying soil is an engineering necessity, the digging has given scientists a rare window into the deep past and formations like the huge pothole.

"There are areas in local parks that have small vertical potholes exposed," Cheryl J. Moss, the senior geologist at Mueser Rutledge, told The New York Times. "But I'm not aware of anything in the city with a whole, self-contained depression on this scale."

Moss and Pontecorvo plan to deliver a lecture about the geology of the site Wednesday at the Tribute W.T.C. Visitor Center next to the ground zero site.

The reminders of the power of glaciers won't be around for long. The pothole and other features are being covered, filled in or blasted away.

"It's nice to look at, but it's all got to go," said Robert B. Reina, a supervising structural engineer at Mueser Rutledge.'

'The Internet and the Death of Communication...'

'In the United States (and throughout much of the Western world, and beyond), education, literacy, and social decorum seem to be heading in the wrong direction. Tragically, the electronic age only seems to have worsened our social malaise. The irony is, we 'communicate' with one another more easily today than ever before. But for reasons stated above, these 'communications' tend to lack real human connectedness... One fairly recent news story illustrating this point reads: '...an authoritative study in the American Sociological Review found that the average American had only two close friends in whom they would confide on important matters, down from an average of three in 1985. The number of people who said they had no such confidant soared from 10 percent in 1985 to nearly 25 percent in 2004; an additional 19 percent said they had only one confidant - often their spouse."'

'Internet porn is changing German sex lives...'

'The internet is fuelling change to the ways in which Germans have sex, according to a survey, as increased viewing of pornography makes people less inhibited.

Scholars at the German Society for Social Scientific Sexuality Research working with London's City University have concluded that a third of men and close to one in 10 women watch porn on a daily basis.

This has contributed to what experts say is a spike in plastic surgery on the genitals and growing pressure at home for couples to have porn-style sex.

The research was based on four months of analysis including an online poll of 55,000 Germans.

"Pornography, in the sense of the description and depiction of sexual activities, is something of interest to every man and woman whether he or she visits [porn sites]," said Rolf Gindorf, a sexologist and former president of the sexuality research society, based in Düsseldorf.

"Our study showed that 98 per cent of men and 90 per cent of women admit to an interest in pornography."

Focusing on the ways sexual attitudes and mores have changed in recent decades, the poll questioned people's range of sexual fantasies and desires and concluded that Germans have become more liberal, more accepting, and more active about the sexual possibilities open to them.

At least half of all 14-year-olds surveyed have watched pornography, and large numbers of young German women say they feel their boyfriends want them to behave like porn stars in bed.
"A lot of sexualities were hidden because people were afraid to admit these fantasies and activities," Gindorf added. "Now with the internet it is obvious many people share the same ideas and wishes and feelings."'

'9/11 precognition?'

This from a reader of The Daily Behemoth:

'Precognizance runs in my family. Holiday dinners almost always see relatives sharing our experiences over baked ham or roast turkey. As a young boy growing up in suburbia, I always thought that everyone's family was thus aspected; I was quite surprised to later learn that such wasn't the general consensus.

Reflecting on my own sensitivity as it pertains to 9/11, I had done a canvas in 1990 of an eerily similar (to the WTC) building being swallowed up from its foundation by a whirlwind in the background, with a stucco fairy tale castle in the forground being engulfed by molten lava from above; a multi-eyed, multi-limbed, black, furry beast eclipsing that; and a burnished bronze warrior giant, stepping into a marshy pond lined with cat tail reeds.

Interestingly enough, admirers of the work often asked years in advance of the tragic event whether I'd intended it to be that ill-fated edifice. I'd like to hear from others in the blogosphere readership here as to their own experiences, precognitive or artistic, as they relate to that world-changing day.'

If you would like to respond to this request, please leave a message below. Thanks!

Behold, the Chronophage...

'They call it the time eater. With every snap of its fearsome jaws, sting of the tail and release of the claws, it devours another second.

An extraordinary new type of clock was unveiled at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge by Professor Stephen Hawking - even if it was 14 minutes and 55 seconds late.

This gold-encrusted monster - part grasshopper and part locust - advancing around the golden disc to measure the passage of time cost over £1million to make and seven years to build.

... [Inventor John Taylor] calls the new version of the escapement a 'Chronophage' which means time eater.

The inventor added: 'Instead of being hidden away inside the clock, the mechanism becomes external and enlarged, and is transformed into a Chronophage - a fearsome beast which drives the clock, literally eating away time.

'Conventional clocks with hands are boring. I wanted to make timekeeping interesting. I also wanted to depict that time is a destroyer- once a minute is gone you can't get it back. That's why my grasshopper is not a Disney character. He is a ferocious beast that over the seconds has his tongue lolling out, his jaws opening then on the 59th second he gulps down time.'

Another quirky feature is the eerie sound of a chain dropping into a wooden coffin hidden behind the clock on the hour, which is intended to be a reminder of human mortality.

The clock does not use hands or digital numerals. By a complex feat of engineering, its movement triggers blue flashing lights that dart across the clockface. What appears to be lights flashing in sequence are actually controlled mechanically, using the same principle as a zoetrope, the old fashioned way to view a moving image through slits. The total wattage used by the clock is less than that of three 60 watt bulbs.

The timepiece is completely accurate only every five minutes. The rest of the time, the pendulum pauses then corrects itself as if by magic. The blue lights play optical illusions on the eye, whirring around the disc one second, then appearing to freeze the next. The effect is hypnotic.

The clock, which has been described by the college's librarian Dr Christopher de Hamel as 'both hypnotically beautiful and deeply disturbing', has now been donated to the college where it will hang outside the new Taylor library named after the inventor.'

Dr de Hamel: "I wanted it to be a monster, because time itself is a monster... It is horrendous, and horrible, and beautiful. It reminds me of the locusts from the Book of Revelation. It lashes its tongue, and flicks its eyes at you. It’s bonkers."

And: http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2008/sep/18/corpus.clock

'"It is terrifying, it is meant to be," said John Taylor. "Basically I view time as not on your side. He'll eat up every minute of your life, and as soon as one has gone he's salivating for the next. It's not a bad thing to remind students of. I never felt like this until I woke up on my 70th birthday, and was stricken at the thought of how much I still wanted to do, and how little time remained."

...Taylor regularly flew over in his own plane from his home in Castletown, on the Isle of Man to keep an eye as beady as his creature's on the work.

...Engineer Stewart Huxley [of Huxley Bertram Engineering at Cottenham] refuses to reveal the secret of its tricks, which include the pendulum occasionally apparently catching and stopping for a heartbeat, and then swinging faster to catch up.

Taylor invested five years and £1million in the project, which involved two hundred engineers, sculptors, scientists, jewellers and calligraphers. The rippling gold-plated dial was made by exploding a thin sheet of stainless steel onto a mould underwater: none of the team actually saw it happen because the only place in the world which could make it was a secret military research institute in Holland.

...The creature, modelled by [Cambridge-based] sculptor Matthew Sanderson, was inspired by medieval armour and gradually became more ominous: part-lizard, part-stag beetle, a Chronophage – time eater.'

John Taylor: [The Chronophage] 'hypnotises the watcher with its perpetual motion, punctuated by an extraordinary repertoire of slow blinks, jaw-snaps and stings from its tail.'

'At the unveiling, Hawking predicted the creature atop the clock would become "a much-loved, and possibly feared, addition to Cambridge's cityscape."

He said: "I have been particularly concerned with time. Why does time go forward? Does time have a beginning and an end? Can one go sideways in time? Some of the answers are given in my book, A Brief History of Time.

"One of the challenges has been to measure the passage of time accurately. Dr John Taylor's invention is a true mechanical spring-driven clock, but it also uses modern technology, high-precision engineering, and high-quality craftsmanship to considerable effect."

'I would be delighted if you would accept my invitation to come to the inauguration of the Corpus Clock, and celebrate the release of the Chronophage and relative time upon the unsuspecting citizens of Cambridge.'

'Pole shift...'

'We know the poles are shifting right now (as they do at regular intervals)—now we know why.

It turns out that fluid in the center of the earth is sloshing around, causing the poles to magnetically shift. In LiveScience.com, Jeremy Hsu writes, "The last major change in the field took place some 780,000 years ago during a magnetic reversal, although such reversals seem to occur more often on average. A flip in the north and south poles typically involves a weakening in the magnetic field, followed by a period of rapid recovery and reorganization of opposite polarity."

Hsu quotes geophysicist Mioara Mandea as saying, "For satellites, [the pole shift] could be a problem. If there are magnetic storms and high-energy particles coming from the sun, the satellites could be affected and their connections could be lost." It’s a good thing that solar storms are mysteriously quiet right now.'

'Apocalypse Now?...'

'Almost exactly seven years ago Al Qaeda terrorists targeted their hijacked planes into the Twin Towers at the heart of New York’s financial centre — and the world was transformed.

There were no deaths this week, but the effects of the carnage on the financial
markets will be far more profound and destabilising than the 9/11 atrocity.

For almost all of us, it will, I predict, be a change for the worse, and for a large
minority the consequences will be extremely distressing.

The Western world — Britain, Europe and the U.S. — has moved from excess to
austerity overnight. This week’s financial typhoon will savagely impact living
standards.

In due course, it will topple governments and lead to a permanent transfer of
economic and political power from Europe and America to the emergent and, in some
cases, such as China, semi-barbarous economies in the East.'

'Why Norfolk should root for Palin...'

'Parading herself as a 'gun-totin', moose-huntin', hockey mom', Sarah Palin's blue-collar creentials could be her ticket to the American vice-presidency.

But she may owe her popular frontiers-woman nature more to an adventurous Norfolk ancestor than her upbringing in the wilderness of Alaska.

For I learn that her great, great, great, great, great-grandfather was Robert Gower, who emigrated to the U.S in the 18th century. According to family documents, he became 'an ideal pioneer'- echoing his descendant's love affair with guns and the great outdoors.

... Robert Gower was born near Holt in 1723 and, according to a seven-page document written in the 1930s by one of his descendants, George Winfield Gower, and now held by Maine State Library, he was probably an English soldier.

He settled in Boston, where he worked in the 'boot and leather business' and married his first wife, Margaret Alexander, in 1759. Records describe him as 'an ideal pioneer... trying to foil every device of the Indians and scouring the forests in all directions.' He died in 1806.

Mrs Palin- dubbed the 'pitbull in lipstick'- shares British roots with McCain and Democrat contender Barack Obama, who genealogists claim are both descended from the same Scottish king.'

'Do you dream about the future?'

'At the Arlington Institute, researchers have consulted precognizant dreamers and have learned about hundreds of case studies of individuals who had explicit dreams about 911 (people jumping out of burning high rise buildings, etc.), beginning some six months before the event. They are studying whether the human collective unconscious somehow anticipates large impending perturbations— and you can participate in the study.

The Institute heard from some of these intuitives that something very substantial and disruptive is going to happen to the US within the next 60 days or so. If these warnings manifest themselves in an event of the significance of something like 911, then people all over the world should begin to experience dreams and other intuitions suggesting that something extraordinary is about to happen.

If you, or someone you know, experiences any kind of significant suggestion (dream, intuition, etc.) that something big and disruptive is about to happen in the coming weeks, send an email to dreams2008@arlingtoninstitute.org and tell them about it. They will compile them all and see if they can find any patterns or pointers toward an actual future event. You don’t need to include any identification and they will keep all of this information confidential.'

'Fleetwood pier destroyed by unexplained fire...'

'Another of England's historic piers was destroyed by fire today in an unexplained blaze in the Lancashire resort of Fleetwood.

Fleetwood pier, which was built in 1910, was left completely gutted by the fire, officials said.

Smoke and flames were first spotted at 4.30am, and the fire service was contacted.

At the height of the blaze 10 fire engines and 90 firefighters were deployed. They eventually contained the fire but too late to prevent the pier being reduced to a smouldering ruin. No one is reported missing or hurt.

A spokesman for Lancashire fire and rescue said the fire began near a derelict pub and cafe, but it was too early to say if it had been started maliciously. Lancashire police said the fire was unexplained and an investigation would be launched.'

'911 Strangeness and Synchronicities...'

'Less than 2 weeks ago, I posted a video on YouTube entitled, "911 'Coincidences' or Synchronicities?". This presentation enumerated around a dozen prescient pop culture connections to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. I don't believe that any of these connections can reasonably be described as a "stretch" or "wishful thinking" (although of course not everyone will agree on their ultimate significance.) A brief overview now might be helpful:

In the 1999 film The Matrix, the expiration date of the passport of Keanu Reeve's character Neo is September 11, 2001.

In the 1998 film Enemy of the State, Jon Voight's character -- a malicious NSA official intent on pushing legislation that will make it easier to spy on Americans -- was born on September 11th.

In the 2001 pilot of the TV program The Lone Gunmen, the story centers on a Pentagon plot to fly a plane into the WTC for the purpose of triggering a war.'

'Skeleton in Britney's family closet...'

'She is the former teenage pop sensation from Louisiana better known for her painful divorce and erratic behaviour than her music. But as America’s tarnished pop princess Britney Spears celebrated a triumphant comeback, sweeping the board at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, details emerged of a secret scandal buried in her family history that would have overshadowed even her well-publicised personal troubles.

Last week The Times traced the 26-year old singer’s ancestry back to Tottenham in North London where her great grandparents, George Anthony Portell and Lillian Esther Lewis, appear to have been living in sin before they were married - a major scandal back in the 1920s.

According to Parish records George, the son of a newsagent, and Lillian, daughter of a lighting inspector named James Lewis, were married on July 29, 1923 - the same day and at the same church, St John's Church in Tottenham, as Lillian’s sister Rose Florence Lewis. However, they gave the same home address on their marriage certificate, indicating they were already living together.

The insight into Spears’ background is just one of several extraordinary pieces of family history buried in the depths of the London Metropolitan Archives. That history will soon be available to internet users across the world at the mere tap of a mouse, under a plan to place the records of more than 77 million people online in one of the largest archiving projects ever attempted.'

'Sarkozy's Big Sister...'

'President Nicolas Sarkozy faced an embarrassing split in his Cabinet today over a computer system that a new French internal intelligence service will use to spy on the private lives of millions of law-abiding citizens.

Hervé Morin, the Defence Minister, broke government ranks to side with a growing revolt against Edvige, an acronym for a police database that will store personal details including opinions, the social circle and even sexual preferences of more or less anyone who interests the State.

Edvige, which is also a woman's name, was created by decree in July to store data on anyone aged 13 or above who is "likely to breach public order".

"Sarkozy's Big Sister", as it has been dubbed, will also track anyone active in politics or trade unions and in a significant role in business, the media, entertainment or social or religious institutions. Listed people will have limited rights to consult their files.'

'Time travellers from the future could be here in weeks...'

'The first time travellers from the future could materialise on Earth within a few weeks.

Physicists around the world are excitedly awaiting the start up of the £4.65 billion Large Hadron Collider, LHC - the most powerful atom-smasher ever built - which is supposed to shed new light on the particles and forces at work in the cosmos and reproduce conditions that date to near the Big Bang of creation.

Prof Irina Aref'eva and Dr Igor Volovich, mathematical physicists at the Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow believe that the vast experiment at CERN, the European particle physics centre near Geneva in Switzerland, may turn out to be the world's first time machine, reports New Scientist.

The debut in early summer could provide a landmark because travelling into the past is only possible - if it is possible at all - as far back as the point of creation of the first time machine.

That means 2008 could become "Year Zero" for temporal travel, they argue.'

'Disney and UFOs'

'Some [UFO] sightings have stood the test of time due to multiple witnesses observing the event. One such sighting occurred in July 19, 1952, when several fast-moving objects "buzzed" the White House... These objects were seen on three separate radar installations, including Washington's National Airport and Andrews Air Force Base. There were similar occurrences a week later, resulting in the dispatch of F-94 interceptor jets. A subsequent press conference resulted in the largest attendance of the media since World War II, and a Disney video called Alien Encounters even has footage of the incident, with the narrator stating:

'This is not swamp gas. It is not a flock of birds. This is an actual spacecraft piloted by alien intelligence- one sighting from tens of thousands made over the last 50 years on virtually every continent on the globe.'

'Will the world end next wednesday?'

'The largest, most expensive scientific experiment in history, the 'Large Hadron Collider', to be turned on next Wednesday.

Although it was designed to answer the fundamental questions of life, some people have claimed that it could end up destroying the entire cosmos.

This gigantic £4 billion-plus atom-smasher has been built under the Swiss-French border near Geneva, and is the most powerful device ever built for probing the secrets of the atom and the forces and particles which make up our Universe.

It is a staggering device, occupying a train-sized tunnel 18 miles long, buried 300ft underground, studded with gigantic, cathedral-sized ring-shaped detectors where collisions between packets of 'heavy' subatomic particles, 'hadrons', will take place in the hope that the innermost workings of matter and energy will be revealed.

The LHC is, arguably, the most impressive machine ever built by Mankind.

But a few people are convinced that it should never be turned on. A lawsuit has been lodged at the European Court For Human Rights by a small group of maverick scientists.

They claim there is a small - but not zero - chance that when the LHC is activated it will create either a mini-black hole which would fall into the ground and swallow the Earth from within (scenario one).

Or, even more bizarrely, trigger a catastrophic chain reaction in the very fabric of space and time itself, which would rip apart the entire universe like the skin of a bursting balloon (scenario two).'

'The return of the Elder Gods?'

'It was not a good day to be an arachnophobe in Liverpool. As part of the city's Capital of Culture celebrations, this scary 50ft mechanical spider was suspended from a building near Lime Street station.

Even worse, La Princess, as the creature is known, is to move around the city at speeds of up to 2mph before it escapes down the Mersey Tunnel on Sunday.

The steel and wood spider has sophisticated hydraulics which allow the dozen engineers strapped to its frame to operate its eyes, legs and abdomen.'

'Are we on the eve of destruction?'

'It has cost £4.4billion and is designed to unlock the secrets of the Big Bang.

But rather than providing vital information about the beginning of life, the world's biggest experiment could cause the end of the world, say scientists.

They fear that the Large Hadron Collider - due to be switched on in nine days' time - will create a black hole that could swallow the planet.

By smashing sub-atomic particles together at close to the speed of light, the LHC aims to recreate the conditions that existed a fraction of a second after the birth of the universe or Big Bang, shedding light on the building blocks of life.

But critics claim that the 'time machine', which has been built 300ft beneath the French-Swiss border near Geneva, could instead spawn a shower of mini-black holes.

Within four years, one of these 'celestial vacuums' could have swollen to such a size that it is capable of sucking the Earth inside-out, said Otto Rossler, one of a group of scientists mounting a last-minute court challenge to the project.

They claim the experiment violates the right to life under the European Convention of Human Rights. However, the case at the European Court of Human Rights is not expected to delay the switch on, scheduled for Wednesday of next week.

Professor Rossler, a German chemist, said the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, or CERN, has admitted its project will create black holes but doesn't consider them to be a risk.

He warned: 'My own calculations have shown it is quite plausible that these little black holes survive and will grow exponentially and eat the planet from the inside. I have been calling for CERN to hold a safety conference to prove my conclusions wrong but they have not been willing.'

Those involved in the project have dismissed the claims as 'absurd' and insist that extensive safety assessments have found the experiment, which is funded by 20 countries, including the UK, to be safe.

A report written earlier this year stated: 'Over the past billions of years, nature has already generated on Earth as many collisions as about a million LHC experiments - and the planet still exists.'

The lifespan of any mini-black holes would be 'very short', it added.

CERN spokesman James Gillies said the arguments before the European Court of Human Rights had been answered in 'extensive safety assessments'.

He told the Sunday Telegraph: 'The Large Hadron Collider will not be producing anything that does not happen routinely in nature due to cosmic rays. If they were dangerous we would know about it already.'

Scientists have used large particle colliders to smash atoms and pieces of atoms together for 30 years, but this machine has attracted so much attention because it is the most powerful ever built.

In the LHC beams of protons will be propelled through an 18-mile-long circular tunnel. More than 5,000 magnets lining the tunnel will accelerate the hundreds of billions of tiny particles to almost the speed of light, allowing them to complete one circuit in one-11,000th of a second.

There will be two beams going in opposite directions, each packing as much energy as a car travelling at 100mph.

When they reach almost the speed of light, they will be smashed head on into each other, breaking them into their constituent parts, including, perhaps, the building blocks of the universe.'
